Why Can’t Studio 56 Hold Spots in a Workshop?

Why no All-day Workshops?
Occasionally we get asked why our art classes are half a day and not a full day. Studio 56 workshops are equal parts art class and cultural experience for several reasons.
First, because while our instructors are professional art teachers with lots of experience, most are not able to keep talking and teaching for a full day. Most need the afternoon to rest.
Also, our philosophy is that we make art in the context of a place. There’s no point in travelling to another country only to spend the entire day looking at our sketchbooks or canvas. We want to explore and experience a new place. Our goal is to learn about the history and culture of our host country and then to see how that impacts the art we are making.
Finally, while the “official’ art class is only half a day, participants are invited to bring their sketching gear to the cultural activity as there will likely be further opportunities to sketch during the rest of the day.
Why is there a Ticket Purchase Deadline?
This trip will be greenlighted as soon as the minimum number of tickets have been sold (10). If we have not sold 10 tickets by the Ticket Purchase Deadline, the trip will be cancelled and your deposit will be refunded to you. This deadline is in place because hotels cannot hold rooms indefinitely.
Are beginner sketchers welcome?
Studio 56 workshops are geared toward all skill levels. Some of the participants will be beginners and some advanced but all will learn new skills, tips and tricks and will benefit from the careful attention of our experienced instructor.
Why is the hotel not included?
Unlike our competitors, Studio 56 is not a travel agency and does not make a commission from hotels. The advantage for participants and instructors is that we are not bound to organize workshops only in hotels that offer a commission. In fact, it means that we can organize workshops anywhere! That's why you will see a variety of workshop locations. Like you we want to explore the world, not return to the same locations again and again. Also, while there is always an "official hotel" where the Tour Manager and Instructor are staying, you are welcome to stay in another nearby hotel or Airbnb if you prefer. Please do compare our prices and you will find that the cost of a Studio 56 workshop plus hotel is still cheaper than our competitor's all inclusive packages.
Why is the hotel not named on the workshop webpage?
If a hotel is offering a discount to our group they do not want that information to be made public. The room rate is always posted on our webpage. Once you make your deposit you will receive an email with instructions for how to book your room. Participants are not obliged to stay in the same hotel as the group. If they prefer, they can stay in another nearby hotel or Airbnb.
Can I get a discount if I only want the art classes and not the cultural activities on a Travel Workshop?
Studio 56 Workshops are packages that include cultural activities and art classes. It is not possible to get refunded on unused parts of the package. Our vacation packages are designed with the understanding that we make art in the context of a place. Why fly to a foreign country if you're not going to explore the place while you're there?
What will my spouse/nonSketcher Companion do while I am in my art class?
Generally, you will be in an art class in the morning and will enjoy a cultural activity in the afternoon because Studio 56 Vacation workshops are equal parts art class and cultural experience. While you are in your art class, your spouse can sleep in (!), enjoy long leisurely breakfasts or explore parts of the town on their own that you will not have time to see. Your art class is your time and your spouse will need to find something else to do while you are in your class. Your Tour Manager will be happy to suggest fun activities. And, of course, you will be joining with the sketchers at lunch and during their cultural activities.
What supplies should I bring?
Please find a supply list on the particular Vacation Workshop webpage you are interested in.
Why do Instructors never teach in the same location twice?
Because it's boring for the instructor. They don't want to keep sketching the same views. They also want to get inspired by new locations, cultures, experiences. So while Studio 56 may return to the same location it will be with a different instructor.
What if I have to cancel at the last minute?
Please see our Vacation Workshop Refund Policy and check the hotel's refund policy. Last minute cancellations are nonrefundable. We strongly recommend that you purchase travel and medical insurance.
What if the instructor must back out at the last minute?
In the unlikely event of the instructor experiencing a last-minute illness or emergency, the instructor will be replaced with another artist of equal skill and the tour will proceed or the workshop will be postponed to a later date. There will be no reimbursement/compensation made to clients.
Are children welcome to attend?
Participants must be 18 years or older to attend unless accompanied by an adult Participant. There is no discount for participants who are minors because they will be getting the full attention of the instructor and taking the place of an adult participant. All participants regardless of age are required to purchase a Participant Ticket.
What about covid-19?
The tour manager and the instructor are fully vaccinated against covid-19. It may be mandatory to show proof that you are fully vaccinated to gain entry to some foreign countries. Covid 19 is still prevalent all over the world. We strongly recommend that you update your vaccinations before travelling to avoid becoming infected while travelling. If you become infected during the workshop you will be asked to drop out of the workshop because we cannot risk the health of the other participants nor the instructor nor tour manager.

Tipping in Europe
How much to tip in restaurants is a question we get asked frequently because the expected amount is different in every country. In some countries tips are more modest such as in Europe where servers are paid a living wage. Remember that you are tipping on the pretax bill. There is no reason to tip on the bill including taxes. Also some restaurants will build a gratuity into the bill. Pay attention and do not tip if this is the case otherwise you are tipping twice.
Below is a list of some expected tipping percentages:
(current as of July 2024)
- Canada–15%-20%
- UK–10%. For exceptional service some would pay 20% of the bill. Tipping is not expected in pubs but it is customary to round up to the nearest pound
- USA–15-20%
- Italy–some say 10% is more than expected. Others say 10-15% is customary.
- France–servers in France are paid a decent minimum wage and 34% of people in France do not leave a tip at all.
- Germany–5-10%
- Spain–it is not mandatory but always appreciated. 5–10% is customary
- Malta–5-10% is customary
- Mexico–depends on service and location. Generally 10-20% is a nice tip.
- Switzerland–not required but 10–15% is customary
- Portugal–not mandatory but appreciated 5-10%
- The Netherlands–5%-10%
- Belgium–10%
- Croatia–10%-15%
Why Can't We Hold Spots in a Workshop?
The only way to hold a spot in a workshop is by paying the deposit fee. That deposit fee guarantees your place in the workshop. Telling the organizer that you are interested in a workshop is not the same as actually signing up for it. The tickets are sold on a first-come first–served basis and when the last ticket is sold, registration closes.
