New Orleans Sketching Workshop with Ian Fennelly
Nov 18-24, 2019
Workshop Itinerary
Your senses will come alive as you see, taste and hear the vibe of New Orleans, Louisiana. Explore the culture, meet new friends, and learn new drawing and painting skills in a small group (10-15 people) workshop setting with our outstanding art instructor, Ian Fennelly.
Ian is an urban sketcher, an artist and a primary art consultant from the north-west of England. Meet Ian HERE. Check out Ian's website HERE. In his fun and whimsical style, Ian will teach 5 workshops, each one focusing on a different urban sketching subject; from classic architecture to street scenes and plantations. Also, Ian will do a series of demos, exploring different techniques; from speed sketching, continuous line work and drawing in paint. Everyone who joins us will also receive one of Ian’s signed limited edition prints of New Orleans.
Day 1 Arrive in New Orleans
Monday Nov 18
Welcome to New Orleans. Our hotel, the Hampton Inn & Suites, is located only a few blocks from the famous St. Charles trolley, that will give you easy access to the regal beauty of the Garden District and the vibrant nightlife of the French Quarter. Students will settle in to their accommodations and will meet up that evening for our first dinner together.
Day 2 City Tour Orientation
Tuesday Nov 19
After a delicious breakfast we will orient ourselves with the city with a morning tour aboard the HOP ON HOP OFF bus. Take in all the sites; centuries of history, architecture, and culture. We will visit the New Orleans Musical Legends Park and Canal Street. After lunch Ian will teach Workshop #1 "The More You Look, the More You See". In the evening enjoy a quiet dinner with your new friends or dance the night away at a local Cajun club.
Day 3 Garden District and Cemetery Tour
Wednesday Nov 20
After breakfast we will take the HOP ON HOP OFF bus to St. Louis Cemetery #1 for an escorted 45-minute walking tour (included) of one of New Orleans' famous above-ground cemeteries. Onwards we will go to explore the Garden District. Filled with stunning, grandiose mansions, colorful Creole cottages, and even O.C. Haley Boulevard– a monumental location for the Civil Rights Movement. Workshop #2 "Let's Go Deeper - Seeing the Small Shapes in the Big Picture" will be held in the Garden District in the afternoon. After dinner students are invited to participate in a Drink & Draw.
Day 4 Jackson's Square and Bourbon Street
Thursday Nov 21
Workshop #3 "Storytelling Through Detail" begins right after breakfast in Jackson’s Square. This 2.5 acre park sees 2 million visitors every year. It is a gathering place for artists who display their art. We will be sure to grab a coffee and a beignet from renowned Cafe du Monde. In the afternoon we will take the HOP ON HOP OFF bus and explore any sites we've missed. Ian will do a Demo on Royal Street in the French Quarter.
Day 5 Dinner Jazz Cruise on the Mississippi
Friday Nov 22
After breakfast, we will walk along Bourbon Street (one block from the hotel) to our sketching location where Ian will teach Workshop #4 "Animate Your Sketches with Character and Colour". In the evening, we will take the trolley to the pier where we will step back into the glamour of the riverboat era and enjoy a Dinner Jazz Cruise aboard the Creole Queen. Onboard we will experience the sounds of New Orleans' best Jazz Bands and soak in the Mississippi River breezes on the promenade deck as the city skyline slips by under a canopy of stars.
Day 6 Plantation Tour
Saturday Nov 23
Today we will set out on an all day excursion. We will travel by private coach along the Mississippi River to Oak Alley Plantation just outside of New Orleans. Built in 1837, this 25-acre former sugar plantation was once the home to 120 male, female and child slaves. Today Oak Alley is a nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching visitors the history of the plantation and those who once resided there. After the guided tour of the home and lunch (included) Ian will teach Workshop #5 "Living, Loving and Drawing the Space that Surrounds Us" on site.
Day 7 Departure
Sunday Nov 24
Enjoy breakfast before returning to the airport. It's time to say goodbye, but you will never forget the friends you've made and the skills you learned during this great week! Or extend your stay for a long relaxing holiday :)
