Hazel Soan's Art of the Limited Palette Online Workshop
In this 1 hour 19 minute online workshop originally presented LIVE you will paint along with renowned watercolour artist Hazel Soan as she guides students through her process for painting a beautiful bough of oranges using a limited palette. Students will get an over-the-shoulder view of Hazel’s painting and can paint along with her by using the reference photo provided.
Hazel trained at the Camberwell College of Arts and the Leicester College of Art. She is celebrated for her vibrant watercolour paintings and the ability to share her knowledge about this exciting medium, particularly about the pigments and their properties. She exhibits worldwide and is well-known for her role as an Art Expert on Channel 4’s popular daytime television programme Watercolour Challenge and for her two series’ of Splash of Colour, made by Anglia TV. Hazel is a bestselling author of numerous highly regarded art tutorial books. She has studios in London and Cape Town and travels widely for her painting. Workshop Structure
This workshop is divided into 2 parts:
- Part 1--Colour theory and exercise. Students will do a brief mixing exercise on painting the colour circle and the warm/cold spectrum. This will require 2 sheets of paper.
- Part 2--Let's make a painting! In the second part, students will apply that knowledge to a full painting of a lovely bough of oranges. This will require one sheet of paper.

For the painting: Hazel is using 100% cotton rough surface (brand: Khadi)
For the Colour Circle exercise: practice watercolour paper, Hazel is using the
back of an old painting on Saunders Waterford paper. 3 sheets of paper altogether are required.
