Which Art Materials Should I Bring?

October 02, 2023

________________________________________________

by Brenda Murray

Every Studio 56 Workshop will have a different list of suggested art materials prepared by the instructor. We suggest you bring whatever is suggested AND NO MORE.

The art materials you use are up to you BUT remember you will have to carry those art supplies with you to the workshop location every morning and often we bring them with us to our cultural activity later in the day in case there is an opportunity for free sketching.

You do not want to lug a heavy bag of sketching materials with you all day. Please pack only what you know you will need for your workshop.

Worst Offenders

1. Camping chairs

A camping chair often made of canvas is not an ideal stool for a vacation workshop. It's very heavy and awkward. It won't fit in a suitcase and it's not something you want to carry around all day. Consider a lightweight collapsible titanium stool instead.

2. The French Easel

A wooden French easel weights 10-14 pounds and it is basically like carrying a coffee table with you all day. Leave it at home. If you must have an easel, choose a lightweight collapsible titanium model instead.

3. Ceramic paint palettes or water dishes

Anything ceramic is going to be a lot heavier than plastic, prone to getting broken and not collapsible. Consider more lightweight, portable alternatives.

4. Books

Books by the instructor or how-to manuals or any kind of book is not something you want to carry with you all day. Books are made of wood and they are heavy.

5. Art Materials not listed on the Workshop Supply List

If you're like most artists, you own a huge amount of art materials. Who can walk into an art supply store and not buy something? Trying new materials is super fun. But carrying supplies that you don't need is not so fun. Please only bring what is required for your workshop.

What if I need something that I didn't bring?

Of course we're curious to see what kind of art supplies are available in a foreign country so most Studio 56 workshops include a trip to the local art store just for fun. So likely there will be an opportunity to buy the item you forgot to bring.

Don't forget, you will be surrounded by friendly fellow workshop participants one of whom will lend you the thing you need but forgot to bring. So please only pack the materials you need and nothing more. It'll be okay. We promise.
