Tips for Avoiding pickpockets
________________________________________________
Avoiding pickpockets in many tourist destinations, requires vigilance and some precautionary measures. Here are some tips to help you protect yourself from pickpockets while traveling in Europe:
1) Stay aware and alert:
Be mindful of your surroundings and pay attention to the people around you.
Avoid getting distracted by your phone or other electronic devices in public places.
2) Use anti-theft bags:
Consider using anti-theft bags or backpacks that have security features like lockable zippers and hidden pockets.
3) Keep your belongings secure:
Carry only what you need for the day and leave valuables, such as extra cash and your passport in your hotel safe.
Use a money belt or hidden pouch under your clothing to carry credit cards and cash.
4) Keep bags and backpacks in sight:
Don't leave your bag unattended, even for a moment.
If you're dining at a restaurant or sitting in a cafe, keep your bag or backpack on your lap or between your feet.
5) Beware of crowded places:
Be especially cautious in crowded areas like tourist attractions, public transportation, and markets, as they are prime locations for pickpocketing.
Keep an eye on your belongings in these situations.
6) Use a crossbody bag:
Crossbody bags can be more secure than shoulder bags because they are harder for thieves to snatch.
7) Be cautious of distractions:
Be wary of people who approach you with unusual requests or try to distract you, as these could be tactics used by pickpockets.
8) Keep a copy of important documents:
Make photocopies or digital scans of your passport, credit cards, and other important documents and store them separately from the originals.
9) Avoid displaying wealth:
Dress modestly and avoid wearing flashy jewelry or expensive designer clothing that might attract unwanted attention.
10) Use RFID-blocking accessories:
Consider using RFID-blocking sleeves or wallets to protect your credit cards from electronic pickpocketing.
11) Trust your instincts:
If something or someone seems suspicious, trust your instincts and move away from the situation.
12) Learn common scams:
Familiarize yourself with common scams in the area you're visiting so you can recognize them when they happen.
13) Travel with a group:
Traveling with a group can provide added security, as pickpockets often target solo travelers. Ask the members of your group to keep an eye on your backpack/purse and do the same for them.
14) Use locks and security devices
Consider using locks or cable ties on your luggage zippers to deter unauthorized access.
Remember that no precaution can guarantee 100% protection from pickpockets, but by staying vigilant and taking these steps, you can significantly reduce your risk of falling victim to theft while traveling in Europe or any other destination.

Pickpockets are very very clever. I lived in Paris for 8 years and never was pickpocketed at that time; all my children were born there. I went back years later with my daughter for a visit. I was told a backpack was much safer than my cross-body bag. Consequently, Daughter transferred my wallet to my backpack (while in Montmartre) and I was pickpocketed only five minutes later. I never felt a thing. Please don’t do anything like this while outside on the street, it was so obvious!
