Venice Watercolor Workshop with LK Bing

May 22-28, 2020

Explore the cobbled lanes and labrynthine canals of Venice with master watercolorist, LK Bing. Together we will paint this glorious shabby magical city with its elegant Gothic porticos and fresh Adriatic breezes. Average temperatures in Venice at this time of year are a high of 82F (28C) in the day and low of 60F (16C) at night.

This vacation package includes 5 art classes taught by LK Bing, plus several demonstrations, many sketching opportunities, a vaporetto tour of the Grand Canal, entrance to the Doge's Palace + attached museums, a classical concert, a tour of the Jewish Ghetto with a cicchetti + wine tasting AND we will take in the annual Festa della Sensa regatta!

Friday May 22, 2020

Students arrive and settle into their hotels. Workshop participants who arrive early are invited to meet in the hotel lobby at 2:00 for a warm up sketch (optional). All tour participants are invited to a welcome reception in the evening. We will meet at 6pm in the hotel lobby and walk from there.

Day 1 Grand Canal Vaporetto Tour + Church of San Giorgio Maggiore

Saturday May 23 

After breakfast we will orient ourselves to the city with a tour of the Grand Canal by vaporetto.

In the afternoon we will take the vaporetto to the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore. Here LK will teach Workshop #1 "Basic Drawing & Value Study". The beauty of Venice can be overwhelming but we will start with the basics and learn how to capture the best composition out of the vast views, exercising quick sketch & value studies using a thumbnail card. Participant will learn how to create beautiful compositions with light and shadow. 

Day 2 Festa della Sensa + Painting in the Giardini Della Biennale

Sunday May 24

In the morning we will watch the Festa della Sensa from the Giardini Della Biennale. The Festa della Sensa is an annual flotilla of gondolas and traditional rowing boats, accompanying the gilt-ornamented barge in which the Doge (the mayor today) travels from the Basin of San Marco to San Nicolò di Lido church where the mayor will throw a ring in the water as a symbol of Venice marrying the sea.

After lunch LK will teach Workshop #2 "Playing with Color". Today we will learn basic watercolor. Understanding the characteristics and kinds of watercolor techniques that we can use to create a harmonious painting. 

Day 3 Tour the Doge's Palace, Museo Correr, the Sansovinian Library + the Rialto Bridge

Monday May 25

In the morning we will tour the Doge's Palace, the Museo Correr and the Sansovinian Library.


After lunch LK will teach Workshop #3 "Creating Beautiful Waterscape" near the Rialto Bridge. The romantic canals and extraordinary architectural background of Venice stirs our emotions. Today we will learn how to paint the real Venice. 

Day 4 Tour the Jewish Ghetto + Wine Tasting + the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute

Tuesday May 26

 In the morning LK will teach Workshop #4 "Atmospheric and Panoramic in Black & White" near the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute. Participants will combine the techniques learned in the three previous workshops to create an atmospheric painting in B&W.

In the afternoon we will tour the Jewish Ghetto and enjoy a wine tasting. During our 2.5-hour walking tour we will learn about the history of the Jewish Ghetto from a knowledgeable local guide. We will visit an open-air market, a mask-making workshop, synagogues and shops and three atmospheric bàcari (wine bars) and learn about the Venetian wine and cicchetti (finger-foods often seafood based) tradition. Tour includes three glasses of wine plus enough cicchetti for a light meal.

Day 5 Palazzo Cavalli-Franchetti Park, a live Classical Concert + Farewell Dinner

Wednesday May 27

In the morning LK will teach Workshop #5 "The Color of Venice" in the park next to the Palazzo Cavalli-Franchetti. Today we will wrap up everything we have learned. Let's pour everything we got from Venice to our paper!

In the evening we will enjoy a classical live concert and our farewell dinner (included). 


Thursday May 28

It's time to say goodbye but you will never forget the friends you made or the skills you learned during this great week! Or extend your stay for a long relaxing holiday :)

    Workshop Participant tickets are on sale on a first-come first-served basis until they are sold out. The minimum number of Workshop Participant tickets needed to greenlight this vacation workshop is 10. Ticket sales will close when the maximum number of available Workshop Participant tickets (15) have been sold. 

    NonWorkshop Participant tickets include the same attractions and meals as the Workshop Participants with the exception of the art classes.

    To reserve your spot in this workshop a $500 nonrefundable deposit is required for Workshop Participants and a $300 nonrefundable deposit is required for nonWorkshop Participants.     Accommodations are not included in the ticket price for this Vacation Workshop. Participants will need to book their own accommodations. The artist and the tour manager will be staying at Hotel Anastasia. It is a short 8 minute walk to Piazza San Marco.

    Venice is a very popular tourist location with hundreds of small boutique hotels. Hotel Anastasia will not be able to accommodate all workshop participants. If you are unable to get a room there, we suggest you try their nearby sister hotel, Hotel Violino D'Oro or some other nearby hotel or Airbnb.

    Please do not make alternate nonrefundable hotel or flight arrangements until this Vacation Workshop has been greenlighted. This Vacation Workshop will be greenlighted as soon as we have reached our minimum registration of 10 participants.  


    Travel + Medical Insurance

    Trip cancellation insurance protects the investment you’ve made in your trip and is highly recommended. Travel medical insurance is mandatory.
