On the Spot Translation
Apologies for promoting one specific brand BUT I am very impressed and indebted to Google Translate for getting me out of some tight situations where I was travelling in a foreign country and had no idea what was being said to me.
While I'm a firm believer in learning other languages, you can't know them all. In Japan I was faced with an indecipherable menu. Not a word of English. Fair enough. Google translate rescued me. By merely scanning the menu I was able to understand what I was ordering.
Google Translate is an app that you can upload to your phone for free. It has 3 very helpful functions:
- It can scan text in any language using your phone camera and translate it into text in your language.
- It can listen to spoken language and translate it into text in your language.
- It can listen to spoken language then translate what was said into another language. A recording will say it out loud so the person can hear it.
I highly recommend uploading this app to your phone and then you will have your own personal translator wherever you travel.
