Granada Vacation Workshop with David Morales

October 24-28, 2023

You are invited to join an exciting 5-day vacation workshop in Granada, Spain taught by Spain-based architect and urban sketcher, David Morales.  David will teach 5 art classes to a small group of 10-15 participants and together we will discover the food, medieval architecture, and culture of this gorgeous city on the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. We're looking forward to making art in good company. The average temperatures for that week in Granada: high of 70°F (21°C) overnight low of 45°F (8°C)--perfect weather for our sketching workshop!

David Morales is a Colombian architect and notebook artist who divides his time  between Barcelona and his hometown Ibagué, Colombia.  David feels deeply passionate about capturing the beauty in worldly things in his notebooks. His notebooks are inseparable from his travels and architecture work. David has been drawing daily since 2018 when he started an artistic project called “One Day One Drawing”.

Arrive Monday October 23, 2023

Workshop participants who arrive early are invited to meet in the hotel lobby at 2:00 for a warm up sketch (optional). David will not be teaching. This is just your chance to do a warm up sketch before the first art class. All workshop participants and nonSketcher Companions are invited to a welcome reception at 6pm. Below is our proposed itinerary.

Day 1--Tourist train to Cartuja + the Sacromonte Caves Museum

Tuesday October 24, 2023

Today we will take a little hop on hop off tourist train to the Sacromonte Caves Museum. Here we will learn more about the life and traditions of its first inhabitants, mainly gypsies and Muslims who made their homes in caves from the 16th century up to the present day.
After lunch we will take the tourist train to the Monasterio de al Cartuja, one of the most representative works of Spanish Baroque. The ornate decoration of its chapels, outbuildings, and the large church it houses make it one of the must-see attractions in Granada. Here David will teach workshop #1.

Day 2--Catedral de Granada + Capilla Real

Today we will walk across the street to a spot near the Granada Cathedral where David will teach Workshop #2.
After lunch we will tour the spectacular Cathedral with its circular choir and numerous chapels.

Day 3--Alhambra

Thursday October 26, 2023

Today we will spend the day visiting Alhambra, a monumental complex made up of palaces, towers, gardens and aqueducts. We will explore Alhambra, the Nazrid Palaces and gardens, Generalife and Alcazaba. This medieval walled city was the residence of sultans and kings from the 13th to the 16th century. David will teach Workshop #3 nearby.

Day 4--Frigiliana and Nerja

Friday October 27, 2023

Today we will travel by private coach to Frigiliana, one of the white hilltop villages in southern Spain. Called the prettiest village in Spain, we will spend some time exploring the higher-up Moorish old town. Here David will teach Workshop #4.

In the afternoon we will visit the seaside town of Nerja on our way back to Granada. Here we will take pix of the view of the Mediterranean, sketch figures on the beach, dip our toes in the sea, or do a little shopping.

Day 5--The Albaicín Quarter + el Bañuelo

Saturday Oct 28, 2023

Today we will visit el Bañuelo, an Islamic public bathhouse with gorgeous star-shaped ceiling cutouts that was in use until the 16th century. Afterwards David will teach Workshop #5 in the Albaicín Quarter.
